Hysteria: OMG is out of my hands and off to the designer and letterer to get it ready for printing.

It’s been a great reminder that I’ve gotten too far away from where I started in comics. When I started making Hysteria back in 99, I did every part of it. I gradually let go of parts as I began working for other folks; first writing, then letters, colors, and eventually even inking.

So doing every part of it again has been a great experience, though adding a tremendous amount to the workload.

I spent last week finalizing all the dialogue, working on balloon placement and then the sound effects.

Hysteria was always manga inspired, down to the SFX. I’d copy the Japanese sound effects I’d see in the manga I collected (back when it was easier to find the untranslated stuff, since manga in English wasn’t as ubiquitous as it is now).

I decided to keep up that tradition, but thankfully with more tools at my disposal. Online dictionaries have been incredibly helpful.

With that, I’ve been hand drawing the SFX to get just the right look.

I love this stuff. The sounds referenced by Japanese SFX can be so specific and nuanced AND look damned cool too! Win, win.

Manga just has cooler sound effects than US comics.
